Tracing its roots back to the Tsing Hua Academy established in 1911, the institution was officially named National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in 1928. Following its re-establishment in Hsinchu in 1955, the Department of Economics was founded in 1984. The department initially offered only an undergraduate program, subsequently establishing its Graduate Institute in 1988 to enroll Master’s students, and a Ph.D. program in 2004. In 2005, the department became part of the College of Technology Management.
Today, the department is a comprehensive academic unit providing Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. Our faculty consists of 22 full-time professors, all holding Ph.D. degrees from world-renowned universities. We are dedicated to providing students with a solid foundation in economic theory and rigorous analytical training. By integrating resources from the College of Technology Management, we offer a diverse, interdisciplinary curriculum designed to enhance students’ leadership abilities and their grasp of global societal trends.

The NTHU Department of Economics is uniquely positioned within a high-tech hub, surrounded by the Hsinchu Science Park, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), and the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Professional Training Center. This proximity allows the department to stay ahead of global trends in technology and economics. Furthermore, the College of Technology Management provides students with access to specialized knowledge and activities in Business Administration, Finance, and Technology Law, making it easier for them to understand emerging practical systems and regulations. In terms of accessibility, frequent bus services to Taipei and the convenience of the High-Speed Rail keep the campus closely connected to the political and economic activities of the capital. Meanwhile, being only an hour away from the Zhuoshui River allows faculty and students to easily engage with the social dynamics of Southern Taiwan.

The department prioritizes core courses such as Principles of Economics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Money and Banking, Public Finance, and International Economics. We also emphasize rigorous mathematical analysis through courses like Mathematical Economics, Econometrics, and Game Theory, alongside foundational studies in Economic History and Methodology to ensure a deep understanding of the field's development.

Students can further enhance their competitiveness by taking advantage of Law, Management, and Finance courses offered by the College of Technology Management, as well as various professional language programs (English, French, German, and Japanese) provided by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

We also promote cross-strait academic exchange through the Jun-Zheng Scholar Scholarship, enabling students to study at leading universities in mainland China. Furthermore, the department collaborates with the industry to provide internships at prestigious organizations like CTBC Bank, MasterLink Securities, and various firms within the Hsinchu Science Park, helping students bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Consequently, our alumni excel across various sectors, with distinguished graduates making their mark in numerous fields. Currently, most graduates find careers in financial services and the information technology industry, while a significant number also pursue roles in academia, research, or the public sector.
